Orthopedic surgeons like to think about the knee joint as having three compartments: the medial compartment (inside the knee), the lateral compartment (outside the knee) and the patella femoral compartment (in front of the knee). If a patient has degeneration in only one compartment, then only that compartment needs to be resurfaced, not the entire knee. This is accomplished through a smaller incision and with much less soft tissue dissection as compared to total knee replacement. Robotic assisted surgery has resulted in performing this surgery with more accurate component implantation and soft tissue balancing, and with more predictable results. Most patients prefer a partial knee replacement when appropriate because the recovery time is much quicker and the knee feels more normal post-surgery. The following video will describe in detail all of the benefits for patients who are candidates for partial knee replacement surgery.
